For 30 years, Flook have been one of the most celebrated bands on the folk scene. Their unique sound, their exquisite playing and the originality of their tunes gained them world-wide fame. Their latest album Sanju proceeds in the footsteps of their most celebrated work and provides five new tracks to their varied catalogue.
Even if the number of sets on this album is smaller than usual, their international fan-base will be delighted by the length of these medleys and by the diverse range of atmospheres and keys. Their trademark dexterity and synergy are still there, particularly in tracks such as Tie the Knot in Georgia / Ed’s Big Five-O / Faqqua and Jig for Sham / The Dawn Walls / Johnny D’s / Time Wavers, where their interplay almost reaches symphonic levels.
A special mention goes to Koady / The Burning Lion, one of the most remarkable tracks in their whole discography, with the second tune composed as a tribute to the city of Lviv and the Ukrainian resistance.
Jigs and reels alternate in a colourful patchwork of musical images, but there are also a couple of meditative passages, particularly at both ends of the release, in the opener The Farther Shore / Winter Flower and especially in the airy Where There is Light that introduces the final set.
With Sanju, Flook not only gifted the world some new tracks, but also take a close look to our reality, as many of the tunes have been inspired by contemporary events, people they met and various elements of human condition. Once again, these four artists manage to shed a light into our souls and environment, exactly what folk music is supposed to do.
Thanks to their well-known mix of exuberant energy and skillful musicianship, Flook have created another unmissable milestone of contemporary folk music.
