Andrews Massey Duo - From the Roots... New Branches

Flute player Emily Andrews and guitarist and banjo player David Massey are two classically trained musicians with a deep interest in traditional melodies from the British Isles. Since their childhood, their families introduced them to a number of folk tunes and songs, many of which are transposed into instrumental pieces in their new album From the Roots… New Branches.

From a quick read of the tracklist, it immediately appears evident that they gathered some lesser-known material alongside old favourites like Loch Lomond, Red Red Rose, Bold Grenadier and Molly Malone. However, the main element that characterises the duo’s music is in the interpretation of these pieces. As you could expect from classically trained artists, their execution is incredibly tight and precise, almost no space for strong ornaments, a little counterpoint here and there; the focus is instead on the tunes, their melodic qualities and suggestions.

A special mention goes to their rendition of Skye Boat Song, a very evocative interpretation in which the waves of the ocean are vividly represented by Massey’s evocative guitar substrate, and of American evergreen Wayfaring Stranger, the only incursion into transatlantic territory on this album.

An airy version of Blow the Wind Southerly rounds up a highly personal work, infused with the artist’s memories and fascinations as well as with their thoughtful playing; a fitting tribute to the stories, places and legends of the rich folk heritage of these isles. From the Roots…New Branches is perhaps not the standard folk album, but nonetheless is a serene and soothing work that will appeal to both trad aficionados and chamber music enthusiasts.
