Paper Flowers - Anna Macdonald

the bright young folk review

Anna MacDonald’s second EP Paper Flowers is a snapshot of her talent, combining her love of traditional music and her own songwriting.

Anna chooses to start the EP in poignant mood with the title track. Her pure soprano voice is complemented well by piano and flute. This is followed by folk classic Matty Groves (a favourite with fans of Fairport Convention in particular). Here we are treated to a Scots version of the song.

More new original songs follow: Glasgow Rain and Naj’s Song. The latter is rooted in the folk canon, being a song of farewell, and containing the entreaty “haste ye back”. Another traditional track, Banks of Inverurie, ends the CD.

Apart fromMatty Groves the arrangements are gentle but far from boring, creating a distinctive Anna MacDonald sound. All in all, a delightful recording.
