Overflow - Michael Coult

the bright young folk review

Irish wooden flute and whistle player Michael Coult is one of the newest and most exciting names on the folk scene; his first album Overflow combines traditional sounds with more modern instruments to create innovative and enticing soundscapes.

This work incorporates a number of different influences, each track having a distinct feel: from the opening Loads O’Shoulders, infused with Celtic fusion vibes, to the ambient inspired Dingle Harbour; from the more traditional sounding Boston Nights to the changing A Tune for Lyn, Overflow is a kaleidoscopic array of instrumental talent.

In spite of its definitely varied nature, the album is always consistent in style. Both in the more laid-back pieces and in the foot-tapping jigs and reels, Coult’s artistic voice shines through with clarity, characterised by his juxtaposed use of ornaments and subtle variations.

The track that probably better summarises the philosophy behind this release is arguably Tir na Spideoga: in just under four minutes, it displays all the different influences perceptible in Coult’s music: jazz, fusion, cinematic music and more.

Adventurous and diverse, Overflow is much more than a debut album. Highly recommended for lovers of folk fusion and woodwind aficionados.
