Where the Grey Slates Meet - Stark

the bright young folk review

Where the Grey Slates Meet is an EP release from Brighton-based three-piece Stark. The band comprise Jamie Francis on vocals & guitar, Evan Carson (drums & vocals) and Josh ’Rusty’ Franklin (bass).

Branded as alternative folk, the blend of folk themes with blues, rock and country influences mean that Stark certainly live up to this billing. With a broad range of influences but a folk heart, the band have a fresh and original sound.

The opening Circle Roads has rhythmic guitar and engaging dreamy vocals before breaking into a more upbeat and contemporary sound. Anger crosses well into blues territory showcasing the powerful vocal talents of Jamie Francis.

The final song on this three track EP, Sailor Song, is fascinating, featuring furious instrumentals, distinct percussion elements and strong lyricism.

Where the Grey Slates Meet is a high class EP that promises a bright future for this talented group of musicians.
