Katie Doherty

2007 Studio album

the bright young folk review

Hailing from the North East, Katie Doherty has a degree in Folk and Traditional Music from Newcastle, and is one of a number of young acts to have been championed by Folkworks. However, her influences go beyond that and while her 2007 album ’Bridges’ has a traditional music feel, it is almost entirely self-penned.

Unfortunately the album doesn’t start that promisingly. Katie’s voice is pleasant enough, but the opening songs are innocuous, playing away happily as background but never really engaging. There are signs that lament ’Sing Softly’ may be a grower, but the album doesn’t really start to come to life until the fourth track, ’Lady Midas’ - a clever self-penned variation on the ’Searching For Lambs’ tune, in which the maiden turns down the noble lord.

Similarly, the Burns-inspired ’Winter is Past’ is a joy, lifted by some excellent pipe work from Calum Stewart. Then comes perhaps the album highlight, the tragic ’Snow Dove’, lyrically strong, with a nice vocal, and well-pitched unobtrusive musical accompaniment.

’Port and Brandy’ is a nice song of lost love, but for me, the album then starts to drift again with ’Bonnie Laddie’ and ’Listen’ - before regaining its stride with ’Something Warmer’ and ending on a bouncy high with ’Sitting On Top of the World’.

There is a wealth of talented female folk singers out there. For someone to make their mark, they need both an excellent voice and the best choice of material. On the one hand Katie has the former, and deserves credit for being more than a voice, penning so much of the material on this CD. She shows she has potential here, with some genuine gems. However, ultimately too many of the songs lack that extra spark that would make the album stand out.

I heard Kate at a local concert at St. Trinity’s last night for the first time. I really enjoyed her numbers and would like to see her at another concert in the near future with a full repertoire of her music.

I would have to disagree with this review, I think Bridges is an excellent listen from start to finish. I have seen Katie live a number of times and I am always blown away by her performance. I would say the song writing on this album is original and well thought out with a real sense of reality within the words.

It might be easy to dismiss this album, as it’s easy to dismiss any album after a brief playback.

However, luckily for me I always listen repeatedly to albums over time, taking them from the bottom of the stack (usually donated to by friends drifting by from time to time), relaxing and allowing my sense of it’s cadence to develop.

I love the moments that pop out suddenly, items that grow and fade, lyrics that drift and drop into your concious train of thought suddenly.

’Bridges’ is certainly one of those albums that beautifully opens up and unfolds with each listen.

I listen to a huge amount of music as I work, and it imprints on what I do. Katie’s album has both livened my spirits and tapped at the cracks in my being with equal measure.

I think those who can relate to the music’s themes by experience will enjoy a more magnetic effect from time to time.

So many times I’ve been enlightened and forced to reflect by this music, sometimes painfully as it’s soulful narrative reminds of times past and loves lost.

Before being swept and lifted back into the present, to who and where you are, with a soft smile and a glimmer in your eye.

All good, true music takes time to discern, and ’Bridges’ is no exception.

I have booked Katie quite a few times now, and found her extreme talent fantastic, Bridges is by far one of the best CDs recorded. Wonderful voice and tremendous personallity.
Katie we all here look forward to the next concert, we will have to talk about bringing you with some of your young folk stars

A talented songwriter, singer and musician. Songs from the heart, crossing from traditional to more modern and a voice to do them justice. A promising debut from a singer who should be around for years to come, with some moments of brilliance.

I was really impressed by Katie’s album and was lucky enough to hear here live and up-close at a friend’s private function just before Christmas - what a voice!!

I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Katie perform live on four occasions and have listened to the Bridges album on many occasions - for many a time it was compulsive repeat playing on the Dixon’s HiFi at home.

I would wholeheartedly say that Katie makes her mark with this debut album. It is my view that her voice is truly distinctive, wonderful and spine chillingly outstanding. I have said too many people over the last year that Katie is destined for great things. The Bridges album is a clear signpost to that. I can hardly wait for album number 2. In the meantime I would recommend any reader do whatever they can to get hold of a copy of the “Child and the Collier” that Katey produced for the Durham Streets of Folk Festival on 8th August. Catch Katie live whenever you can, before her concert ticket prices reach the level of the top performers in the UK…..I am certain they will.

Since I first heard Maddy Prior only three female singers have rivalled her her for vocal talent and presence on stage and Katie Doherty is one of them. Her songwriting skills are only surpassed by her voice - if you have not got Bridges then get it, if you have not heard her live, make sure you do. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed!
